Recently, I had the privilege of attending the 🇪🇺European Parliament Meeting in Brussels, where healthcare professionals, researchers, patients, and policymakers gathered to discuss the pressing issue of the Allergy and Asthma Epidemic. As an advocate for allergy and asthma patients, I emphasized the importance of incorporating the patient’s perspective in our efforts to enhance allergy and asthma management. The focus of the meeting was on adopting a One Health-in-All-Policies approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and the environment. In this blog post, we’ll dive into the significance of this approach and the role of bioaerosols in shaping public health.

Bioaerosols are tiny particles suspended in the air, carrying microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and pollen. These particles can be released from various sources, including plants, animals, and human activities. While bioaerosols are fundamental to life on Earth, they also have a significant impact on human health, agriculture, and the environment.

The One Health Approach highlights the crucial relationship between human health, animal health, and the environment. In the context of bioaerosols, this connection becomes evident when we examine their impact on all three components of the ecosystem:

Climate change has already had a substantial impact on allergy patients, resulting in longer and more intense pollen seasons. As global warming continues, the effects of climate change on aeroallergens are expected to intensify, posing greater risks to sensitized individuals. Heatwaves and air pollution can further exacerbate respiratory problems, particularly for asthma sufferers. As green infrastructure becomes part of climate adaptation strategies, it may also increase aeroallergen loads and allergic reactions, requiring careful consideration of suitable plant species for urban environments.

Attending the European Parliament Meeting on the One Health-in-All-Policies Approach was an eye-opening experience. By incorporating patient perspectives and embracing real-time bioaerosol monitoring, we can pave the way for a healthier future. Through research, education and advocacy, we can tackle the allergy and asthma epidemic, reduce healthcare costs, and foster a better understanding of the complex relationship between exposure, climate change, and One Health.
